Can it be done? Or do the rimmed rounds screw it all up?

x54r is less than a 1/2 cm longer and a little fatter than x51.

I would think that the rimmed case would be the problem, and the higher pressure.

Way beyond my knowledge - but it would make one hell of an affordable battle rifle to plink with!

I've always heard that the FAL is on the bleeding edge of being able to stand up a to a .308 (it was designed for a smaller cartridge, yes?). I don't think that it would hold up well bumping it up to a 54R.

Stimpy on the FAL Files has made a 8mm x 57mm Mauser FAL.

I think he finally got it to work about the time 8mm got scarce and expensive again.

I imagine you would have to make it use different mags. That is even if you could get it to work with that shitty rimmed case. it would be pretty much a waste of time and money.

Indeed. And then there's the small tiny matter of a different bolt.

However, there are designs that use .303 British that have been sucessfully converted to 7.62x54R. The bores are th same (metric .311 as opposed to American .308) and even the same mags can be used (SMLE, BREN). There's even a guy making conversions in this caliber for 1919A4 Brownings.

Just buy a surplus SVT for about $900 and save yourself the aggravation of tweeking an existing design.

Personally, I think that if some domestic manufacturer went into new production of the old soviet SVT rifle (perhaps modified to use cheap and plentiful Bren mags), that would be a hot seller due to the supply of inexpensive blasting ammo out there.
