It takes a lot of $ to get a scope beyone 16 power and stay clear and focussed. I have tried with a lot of cheap scopes before going back and getting a lesser good quality lesser power scope. Since then I haven't had a need to go past 16 power and I shoot pretty far.

I think im gonna buy a SS 16x for my new setup for doing LR shooting, my 10x on a my PTR91 makes me feel its not enough magification for LR shooting to see where you are hitting at.

FYI - I've bought many scopes from Optics Planet. Research the best price for the scope you want. They usually match, or beat, the price and include free shipping.

You get what you pay for in scopes. For your loooong range shooting IMHO if you don't go the route of at least a NightForce, USO, IOR etc, etc, you will be sorry in the long run. You need resolution at those distance as your finding out with your Tasco and cheaper scopes like you mentioned might be ok for 500 to 600 yards but sorely lack the resolution you need at long range. I had to learn the hard way and eventually ended up with a NightForce 8-32X56 NXS. Expensive scope, yes, but well worth it in the long run. The 12-42X56 NXS might even be a better choice for really long distance.

Just remember that you'll be dealing with a lot of mirage and extra image movement with a higher magnification scope. I think a 20-25x is the absolute most I'd ever go with, but YMMV.

True, but the 8-32X56 NXS fills the bill quite nicely. I rarely use it higher than 25X because od problems you mention, but its nice to have the extra magnification if you need it and conditions are right.

What do you consider "really long distance?"

I constantly find myself turning down the magnification to 15-16 power at a 1000 on my buddy's Nightforce 5.5x22.
I just got my rifle back and mounted my Nightforce 3.5-15x50 and I plan to take it out to 1100 tomorrow if my load allows it. I don't feel like the extra magnification is needed or even wanted in my case.
On a side note, for all those guys that think you need a high magnification scope to shoot tiny groups, not really.
I shot a .055MOA (roughly 1/18th MOA) 3 shot group the other day at 100 during load development, this was with my 3.5-15 NXS.
Yesterday I was shooting prickly pear leafs at 550 yds on 12x. you really don't need a 42 power scope for anything in the .30 or .338 cal. Hell when cheyenne tactical does there packages with NF scopes they put on the 5.5x22, nothing more is really needed.
Sorry for the bit of a rant.

I don't know what really looong distance means either since the original poster did not specify. But If it's well over 1000 yards I would consider that really looong distance. At that point IMHO a bit more than a 5.5-22 nxs would be nice. At least for my eyes, perhaps not in your case since our visual acuity may not be the same.

I personally prefer the WOTAC the 4x14x50 the glass is clear at least for me all the way out to 1000 yds. and then some . The best part is the turrets match the reticule MOA's makes it easier to figure. The turrets are positive clicks in both sound and feel. The glass is clear in all power settings with no fuzziness around the edges.

To all the others out there as far as my eyes are concerned they all look the same. None are clearer then their counter part. So why should I spend a $1000.00 or more for to me anyway is in no way any help.

Everybody has a opinion .
It is best if you do your own research.
There are a lot of forms dedicated to long range shooting .
Look at what 1000yd bench rest shooters are using .
Go to snipers hide.com and see what most of them want.

If you settle for good enough you will regret it
