So who carries the Good ones in the Phoenix area??

Or do you have to order them in to your favorite FFL?

This is a great list.

Thanks. I'm interesting in having a top of the line AK built this year. I just have a question , why is Nodakspud considered the best receiver? I can't even find any info on them.

I've built several on OOW, they're not bad.

This list is more about the people you don't like personally than the actual quality of the recievers.

This is a good thread on the OOW receivers. Seems they can be made to work fine just take more work.

http://www.akforum.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3926

As far as the Ewbanks/Joeken receivers I have read the following:

Current ones are made on Hesse/Vulcan tooling. Originally they were made from Tapco flats. Maybe produced by Horn.

Center support pin is often too short causing the receiver to taper.

Pin hole locations often out of spec.

Not square, twisted front to back.

Problems with the heat treat on the ejector.

Mag support welded above the mag opening is too long and requires grinding.

Having done a fair bit of reading about AK receivers lately, I also have to question categorizing OOW as a "bad" one.

The info I've come across suggests to me that OOW is one of the more "preferred" receivers of the DIY AK crowd - at least among the DIY guys who don't bend their own from flats. I do agree with putting Nodak and Global at the top, though. That does seem to be a consensus based on what I've read.

I'm the first to admit I'm no expert on this topic. But I do have an OOW on order that's going to wind up on a kit before too long. So I guess I'll find out one way or the other...

The Ewbanks Gen2 receivers I have used never were a problem for me. I have also had the opportunity to inspect the receivers before I purchased them. There definitely were some quirks to them, such as magwell placement and slight rivet hole alignment on predrilled receivers but they are easily overcome. I have over 5K rounds through one of them built with a Romanian kit and it has had no functioning issues whatsoever.

i will never build again on a Vulcan/Hesse. In fact I am rebuilding a couple of AK's on the newer Nodakspud receivers which were originally built on Vulcan/Hesse ones.

I have done four builds with NDS 3 from nodak, they are very good receivers, and heat treated as well, some have rivets holes pre-drilled.
