This evening I went shooting in Ye Olde Desert and brought along my EDC gun, a Taurus 605SS. Up until now the gun has always functioned perfectly for me, and I've cleaned and lubricated it after every shooting session.

Anyway, after running a mixed bag of .38SPL and .357Mag through it (all factory loads; .38 was Federal, .357 was Remington), I'm unable to release the cylinder and the trigger doesn't completely reset. I ran perhaps 30 rounds of .38 and maybe a dozen .357.

When I pull back the hammer up to halfway I can spin the cylinder (this is normal), and it operates correctly (cylinder spins freely until timing is engaged, and it times just fine). However, when pulling the trigger the hammer doesn't completely reset; it seems like the trigger is recessed perhaps 1/8" from its normal position, and the hammer sits ever so proud of the frame (about 1/16") -- until I tap the trigger or hammer, at which point it returns to normal.

The cylinder release also decided to act up, and I imagine that both problems share a cause but I can't quite figure it out. I've blown some air and cleaner through the cylinder and trigger mechanisms to no avail. The cylinder release does not move at ALL; it feels like a mechanical binding, not just heavy friction. I've taken off the cylinder release lever and lubricated it but this has yielded no results. It is stuck fast.

I've also removed the grips and three sideplate screws but the sideplate does not want to walk off. I won't pry at it, and rapping it with a rubber mallet from the far side only yields very slight movement. Plus, I'd really prefer to avoid removing the sideplate if it all possible.

I know Taurus has an unequivocal lifetime guarantee, but I don't want to deal with A) paying a huge shipping fee, and B) waiting a month to get my gun back from them.

Any thoughts?

A month would be great considering every smith I know has a bare min 90 days to four months.

Does your 605 have this issue while pulling through D/A or only when coming off S/A??

The cylinder release is totally jammed, and the trigger reset issue occurs most often with DA but occasionally with SA as well.

Taurus says their turnaround is 2-3 weeks, and UPS will ship it ground for about $15. I guess I'll go ahead and send it in, but that leaves me without a readily-concealable firearm.

Then that is a screamin deal.

Wear a bigger clothes, or get another small gun when you can.

The gun's going to UPS in the next few days en route to Taurus.

Amusing post when taking in consideration that automotive serve shops are a dime a dozen, but a great gunsmith is few and far between.
I myself would more then gladly take my baby to Glockmonger and wait and not have a problem if it wasn't done in short time, knowing perfection takes time and is a slim commodity that is in higher demand.

The gun just came back to me today. The cylinder release works again (if tighter than it used to be, perhaps) and the trigger reset seems fine.

The work description simply reads:

ALTERATIONS-Bolt | REPLACED

I'm not quite sure what this means.
Also, there was a tiny little spring (maybe 1/16"x3/4") floating around in the box. I'm guessing this was just floating around in the factory and was shuffled into the box by accident.

Can anyone shed some light on either of these things? What bolt might have been replaced, and what's that spring doing?

The bolt is the piece that pops up out of the frame into the cylinder slots to lock it in position for firing..... Don't know about the spring.

Ah, that makes sense. I think the spring was just a fluke.

I'm going shooting tomorrow morning and I'll run some .38sp/.357mag through it to see how it works. I'm guessing all is well, but we'll see!
